Thailand visa-free stays: cut to 30 days for most, but 90 days for Korean passports
News that Thailand’s visa-free stay has been cut to 30 days left many Korean travellers wondering whether it applies to them. In short: at the time we checked, holders of South Korean passports could still stay visa-free for 90 days.
This guide is based on the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) entry requirements for Thailand and a Dongpo News report citing the Korean Embassy in Thailand.
Most nationalities: from 60 days to 30
From September 15, 2026 Thailand reduced the visa-free tourist stay for many nationalities from 60 days to 30 days. That is why it is easy to assume the same news applies to Korea.
Why Korean passports get 90 days
South Korea and Thailand signed a visa exemption agreement in 1981. According to the embassy, under this agreement Korean nationals can stay visa-free for 90 days as long as the purpose is not work. The answer differs because it is based on a bilateral agreement rather than the general tourist rule.
Visa-free entry by land: twice a year
To stop so-called visa runs, where travellers hop to a neighbouring country to extend their stay, visa-free entries over land borders are limited to two per year. If your itinerary crosses land borders, count your entries in advance. For extensions, follow the guidance of the local immigration office.
Before you arrive
You need to complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before you arrive. You may be asked to show proof of funds for your stay, so be ready. Fill in the arrival card on the official website, not through an agency site.
Five checks before you go
- Check your passport validity (six months from entry for Thailand)
- Complete the TDAC digital arrival card in advance
- Make sure your whole trip stays within 90 days
- Count your land-border entries
- Check local weather and safety news such as flooding
